Introducing Frances McLellan

Fran McLellan arrived in Oakville in 1960 and by 1970 had become actively involved in the world of figure skating through Skate Oakville (formerly the Oakville Skating Club). From her home base of Oakville, Fran expanded out into the Burlington and Mississauga skating communities.
As a competitive athlete herself, Fran achieved the silver level in dance and competed in synchronized skating for 25 years, most proudly with her daughters Laura and Leanne for a period of that time.
After competitive skating, Fran then transitioned into team management, providing leadership in the growth and development of synchronized skating in the Oakville area and became a senior level judge. In 2000, Fran received the prestigious Elizabeth Swan Award in recognition of her contributions to synchronized skating.
In 1998, Fran formed Ice Precise under the Mississauga Figure Skating Club to continue adult category “precision skating” (as it was then known). The team initially entered a competition under the name “Magic Motion” and placed 2nd. Becoming “hooked”, they changed their name to “Mississauga Ice Precise” and grew into a full team. In their first year, the Mississauga Ice Precise Masters Team captured the Ontario Regional Championship. Since that first successful year, Ice Precise teams have captured an impressive list of championships around the world.
As manager of the Burlington Nexxice synchronized skating team, Fran saw her team win gold at the 2009 World Synchronized Skating Championships as well as silver at the 2012 ISU senior world championships. In addition, the senior team has also won six national championships, a gold at the ISU Synchrofest Competition and a bronze at the Mozart Cup in Salzburg, Austria. Fran was presented the Spirit Award by the NEXXICE team in recognition of her long-term commitment and support.
With more than 45 years of contribution to the sport of synchronized skating, Fran is the “Grand Dame” of team skating in Oakville, Burlington and Mississauga.
Fran and her family are long time residents of Oakville.
